Kingston Citizens Advice Bureaux Annual Report 2006 - 2007

Internal and external factors

The charity is only too well aware of the financial pressures experienced by its major funders, and in view of this has taken active measures to seek additional sources of funding for its services. During the year, we were engaged in negotiations with the local authority as our key funder on the next three year grant. As the outcome of these negotiations was unknown, we did not embark on a recruitment drive for new volunteer advisers, as part of our Risk Management strategy. Our negotiations were successful and we have now embarked on a recruitment drive for new staff.

Maintaining external quality accreditation is essential for the charity. We passed the Citizens Advice Quality and Organisational audit in 2005-06 and we continued to maintain audit standards with systems for record checking, independent file reviews and support for staff with development needs.

KCAB case examples:

Client and partner both have learning difficulties and attended special school. They have dependent children also with learning difficulties. They have never worked and they claim means tested benefits. They approached Lloyds Bank for a £3,500 loan, which was granted, despite the only income being their welfare benefits. The clients were also sold payment protection insurance (PPI).

They came to us to see if we could help them to write and cancel the PPI

We are trying to write off the whole loan as it is clearly inappropriate lending and a breach of British Banking Association guidelines, as well as cancelling the PPI.
