Kingston Citizens Advice Bureaux Annual Report 2006 - 2007

Volunteers

The charity receives help and support in the form of voluntary assistance in advising the public and in administering the charity’s operation. 45 volunteers contributed nearly 17,000 hours of work to KCABS during the year. We estimate the monetary value of this help to be about £216,000 (2006 - £203,000).

The increase in our input from volunteers this year is largely due to our ‘Students Project’, whereby we recruit and train young people to work on our reception desk, get involved in our campaigning work and carry out research work on complex cases.

This innovative scheme is noted nationally as an example of good practice and it is our hope that we shall expand our support for young people as a result of this project and increase their awareness of the relevance to them of the service we provide.

The Trustee Board is extremely grateful to all our volunteers for their support and dedication.

KCAB case examples:

We have been helping a couple in distress (both 64) with debts of roughly £30,000. Husband had to give up work after being diagnosed with terminal cancer. When they came to see us they were only getting Statutory Sick Pay for the husband. We helped them to apply for Council Tax benefits and Attendance Allowance and sought to have their debts written off in view of the prognosis.
The husband has since then died leaving his wife with no assets. With further representation, we have now succeeded in getting all of their debts written off.
